2)      Single stage

Single stage coats are also known as one stage, mono coat or direct gloss. They are used to achieve the final gloss of the surface without the use of clear coat.

3)      Base coats

This paint is also known as base or base color. These are the type of auto paint which requires the application of clear coating to get the required gloss of the surface.

4)      Mid coats

These are the types of auto paints which create a different and unique color effect by applying a semi transparent color layer over the base coat layer. Using of mid coats is also referred to as three stage coating.

Scratch Repair

Where there are cars, there are scratches. These scratches are of various sizes, from thin to wide, from small to large, each have some different technique to remove by touch up paint. The touch up paint though used for removing scratches on one side doesn’t mean on the other hand that you should not follow any procedure for application of auto paint. The process of automotive scratch repair is systematic and requires extreme care. The process of automotive scratch repair is divided into three major steps. We will explain these steps one by one.

First step of auto paint scratch repair includes purchasing the right paint for your car. While buying auto paint, this should be kept in mind that the paint to bought matches with that of the car. Changing of color may result in not getting the desired results. If you don’t know the color of your car don’t worry, there is a plate around driving seat of the car where color of the car is mentioned.

Second step of the fixing scratch of your vehicle is application of the color. Make sure that ht e target area is dust and rust proof while applying the paint. Mixing of paint with touch up paint in proper ratio is very important and one applying the paint can easily understand what should be the ratio as this not a rocket science. The tool used for the application of paint should be set according to the size of scratch. If the scratch are is small then the size of brush should also be small accordingly. Choosing the right size is also very important because the paint applied should not intersect with the paint of car on large area. This gives a non professional finish and one can easily see the paint applied. Before applying the paint, sand the target area so that it makes the surface a little rough which helps the primer in adhering to the surface. Wash the surface also so that the dirt and other non required elements don’t get in your way of removing a scratch.

Apply the color in such fashion that the motion of the brush is from the edges towards the centre making an inward motion. This will give a smoother finish as compared to the motion opposite to that of described before.

In the end give time to the paint to make itself stick to the surface and use wax or polish after that to give a shiny and glossy look.

Car Scratch Repair – Pros and Cons of Touch-Up Paint

Clear Coat Scratch Repair

At some point in the ownership of a car, you are going to get a scratch in the paint. For the most part this isn’t a big deal, but for some motorists a glaring scratch in a paint job will drive them crazy. While most minor scratches can be overlooked, there are some that have to be taken care of. Touch up paint is the choice for many. Typically low in cost, they allow the owner to touch up areas of paint that have been scratched or damaged.

Touch-up paint works by targeting the clear coat on an automobile. A cars paint job consists of the bare metal, to which color is applied. On top of that is the clear coat, which is where the majority of the nicks and scratches occur. The touch-up paint is usually a clear coat that simply fills in the nick or scratch on contact, usually drying and hardening in the sun. This simulates the original finish in every way, and is often unnoticeable. Other touch-up paints are of the two-step variety. The first step is a pigment that is spot matched to the color of the car. The second step is the resin or protective finish that blends in with the cars original finish, creating a seamless coat. The first type is most often used for superficial nicks and blemishes, while the second type is more likely to be used on deeper scratches, which reveal the metal or powder coating beneath the resin or gloss finish.

The most obvious benefit of handling the touch up on your own is the cost. Most solutions are fairly inexpensive, especially when considering the cost of having your car repainted or repaired by a professional. In most circumstances the end result is of a good enough quality one would be hard pressed to tell even where the scratch was. For most people the process is not terribly difficult, and the results are fantastic.

For some scratches and dings; however, touch-up paint will not do the trick. Often if the scratch is deep or on a curved area of the car, the touch-up paint will be noticeable. Also, some vehicles current paint job make adding a fresh coat of resin very obvious. One other issue with touch up paints is they are often ineffective at masking blemishes on cars with exotic or expensive paint jobs.

Ultimately it depends on the type of paint job your car has and your ability to perform the work yourself. For some, it’s an easy way to save a couple of hundred dollars, for others it simply will not work for their application.
